New African Woman caught up with the reigning Miss Universe, Angola’s Leila Lopes to learn the secrets of her gorgeousness and how she is handling the coveted crown. Interview by Claire Muffett-Reece
Congratulations on winning Miss Universe! How do you feel?
Leila Winning: this competition means more to me than you’ll ever know. It’s a dream come true and without a doubt my biggest achievement to date. It’s a life-changing opportunity for anyone, and as an African woman I feel undoubtedly blessed that I can show the world the true beauty of my continent.
Why did you decide to enter the competition?
Ever since I was a little girl I had always dreamed of competing in the Miss Universe Pageant. It is a once in a lifetime experience and what makes it even better is I can now use my beauty as a tool for goodwill.
It must take a lot of work to keep looking good?
I admit I take very good care of my body on a daily basis, which can be quite tough! It was especially challenging while preparing for the pageant in Brazil, as I was constantly surrounded by delicious food, but I was careful to eat small portions and continue to work out to keep my figure in check.
